  • learn all the necessary basics of music theory adapted for the modern electronic producers

How it works
Basic Music Theory can take up to 2 weeks or 30 days to complete, depending on the timetable established with a student. It includes 5 individual online video sessions (60 minutes each), as well as practical assignments which usually take up 2-5 hours to complete. All of our sessions are recorded with screen capture software and provided for student's private use, in order to further establish the concepts and practical technics reviewed in the course.

Curriculum

All of the sessions will be held in the DAW of your choice: Ableton, Logic, FL Studio, Cubase, Bitwig, Studio One. If you are just starting out we will help you choose your first DAW on our free 30 minutes interview call.
Fundamentals
Black keys can't hurt you
Learning the notes and the logic behind them. Sharps and flats, half-steps and whole-steps. What is a tonic? How to find and form a key? Understanding major and minor.
Monophonic sound
One note is enough
What is a melody? Importance of rhythmic accents, repetition and form. Analysing famous works. Melodic intervals: their names, character and function.
Polyphonic sound
Three is a crowd
What is a harmony? Harmonic intervals: their names, character and function. Consonance and dissonance. Types of chords, inversions and ways to form them. Basics of voice-leading.
Chord progressions
From A to B
Functional harmony: relations and functions of chords. Typical chord patterns and substitutions. Ways of enriching harmony. Parallel and relative keys. Exotic modulations.
Practice
makes perfect
Ways to combine melody and harmony. Understanding the Circle of Fifths/Fourths. MIDI editors, helpful VST plugins and tools inside your DAW.

Since all of our courses are 1-on-1 meetings, we always try to tailor these lessons to your experience and needs. If some part of the course is already familiar to you— we are willling to substitute them with more advanced concepts from another course.
